Corpus Christi VA Home Loan Eligibility Requirements

The service requirement is a significant factor in a VA loan. You’re automatically disqualified if you don’t meet the requirement unless your case fits the exceptional circumstances.

Service Requirements for Veterans

You qualify for a VA home loan if you meet at least one of the following conditions as stipulated by the US Veterans Affairs Department:

  1. Served at least 24 continuous months
    1. From the Gulf War to the present day
    2. Between September 8, 1980, and August 1, 1990
    3. Between October 17, 1981, and August 1, 1990, as an officer
  2. Served at least 90 or 181 days for which you were called for active duty
    1. 90 days – From the Gulf War to the present day
    2. 181 days – Between September 8, 1980, and August 1, 1990
    3. 181 days – Between October 17, 1981, and August 1, 1990, as an officer
  3. Served 181 continuous days
    1. Post-Vietnam War period
    2. Between May 8, 1975, and October 16, 1981, as an officer
    3. Post-Korean War period
    4. Post-WWII period
  4. Served at least 90 total days
    1. During the Vietnam War
    2. Between November 1, 1995, and May 7, 1975, in the Republic of Vietnam
    3. During the Korean War
    4. During WWII

Service Requirements for National Guard Members

If you served between the Gulf War and now, you need at least 90 days of active duty. Otherwise, you must have served:

  • At least 90 days of non-training active-duty service, or
  • At least 90 days of activity-duty service, or
  • Six creditable years in the National Guard and discharged honorably or retired

Service Requirements for Reserves

If you served between the Gulf War and now, you need at least 90 days of active duty. Otherwise, you need at least 90 days of non-training active-duty service or six creditable years in the selected reserve. Besides any of the two previously mentioned, you were

  • Discharged honorably, or
  • Placed on the retired list, or
  • Transferred to Standby Reserve or element of the Ready Reserve, or
  • Are still part of the Selected Reserve

Exceptional Circumstances

You may still be eligible for a VA loan if you were discharged due to:

  1. Hardship, or
  2. At the convenience of the government after serving at least 20 months of a two-year enlistment, or
  3. Early out after serving at least 20 months of a two-year enlistment, or
  4. Reduction in force, or
  5. Medical conditions, or
  6. Service-connected disability
