Brownsville Native Americans Overview
Brownsville has a rich Native American history, with various indigenous tribes inhabiting the region long before European settlement.
Prior to European contact, Brownsville was home to several Native American cultures, including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Shawnee, Choctaw, and others. These tribes established settlements, practiced agriculture, and developed complex social structures.
