California Native Americans Overview

California is home to a diverse array of Native American tribes, each with its own unique culture, traditions, and history.  Some of the prominent Native American tribes in California include:

Ohlone: The Ohlone people historically inhabited the coastal areas of what is now the San Francisco Bay Area. They lived in small, scattered villages and relied on hunting, gathering, and fishing for sustenance.

Miwok: The Miwok people lived in central California, primarily in the Sierra Nevada foothills and the Central Valley. They were skilled basket weavers and hunters, and their territory was rich in natural resources.

Pomo: The Pomo people inhabited parts of northern California, particularly the coastal and inland areas around Clear Lake. They were known for their intricate basketry and lived in small, semi-permanent villages.

Chumash: The Chumash people lived along the coast of southern California, from Malibu to San Luis Obispo. They were skilled seafarers and traders, known for their plank canoe technology and intricate rock art.

Tongva (Gabrieliño): The Tongva people inhabited the Los Angeles Basin and parts of the surrounding region. They lived in villages and practiced a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, supplemented by trade with neighboring tribes.

Hupa: The Hupa people resided in the northwestern corner of California, along the Trinity River and its tributaries. They were known for their redwood dugout canoes, intricate basketry, and ceremonial dances.

Yurok: The Yurok people lived along the Klamath River in northern California. They were skilled fishermen and hunters, known for their use of redwood canoes and ceremonial dances such as the Brush Dance.

Karuk: The Karuk people also lived along the Klamath River, primarily in the mid-Klamath Basin region. They practiced a subsistence lifestyle based on fishing, hunting, and gathering, and their culture is deeply intertwined with the natural environment.

These are just a few examples of the diverse Native American tribes that have inhabited California for thousands of years. Each tribe has its own unique language, customs, and traditions, contributing to the rich tapestry of indigenous cultures in the state.
